Currently there are multiple suits by artists against the New York City Parks Department because of the new rules instituted by the Department during the summer of 2010. Those Rules dramatically restrict the ability of artists to work in four New York City Parks: Central Park, Union Square Park, Battery Park and the High Line. The suits will play out in court during 2011 and 2012.
A.R.T.I.S.T. (Artists' Response To Illegal State Tactics) is the organization leading the fight to protect the rights of artists working in New York City Parks and on New York City streets. There's lots of great information on their Yahoo Groups newsgroup.
